New Guidelines to support gene banks and animal health legislation

The ERFP has released new guidelines to support the recognition and organization of gene banks in Europe. The document is an output of an Ad Hoc Action let by Fernando Tejerina (Spain) with the participation of the EU Reference Center for Endangered Animal Breeds. These guidelines aim to strengthen capacities in meeting animal health protection requirements while promoting the conservation of animal genetic resources.

This initiative builds upon the European Strategy for Animal Genetic Resources, developed in 2021 under the EU-funded H2020 GenResBridge project. The Strategy supports the implementation of the FAO Global Plan of Action for AnGR and aligns with European policy priorities.

A key focus of the Strategy is ex situ conservation through cryopreservation of genetic materials such as embryos, semen, and tissue. These techniques are vital for preserving biodiversity and ensuring future breeding and research opportunities.

One of the major challenges identified is the lack of legal provisions for gene banks in national animal health legislation. The new guide addresses this by recommending specific derogations that allow gene bank operations without compromising biosecurity.

The document offers a comprehensive analysis of international and EU regulations, along with best practices from countries that have successfully integrated gene banks into their legal frameworks.

By providing clear guidance for national authorities, the ERFP hopes to enhance the role of gene banks and ensure long-term conservation of Europe’s rich livestock heritage for future generations.

The guidelines are available here.
